Practical information

The course DNA & life consists of a full-day visit to the DNAlab which is the Natural History Museum of Denmark teaching laboratory for high schools. In the DNAlab the students will use classical morphological methods, as well as modern molecular biology techniques for species identification.

The DNAlab is located at the Zoological Museum, Universitetsparken 15, København. There is room for 24 students per day in the lab and classroom.

NB: The museum itself, and therefore also the exhibitions, are closed for the public. Classes that participate in DNA & life have been given the extraordinary opportunity to use the DNALab, which is still located at the Zoological Museum. In relation to this, the class must be aware of the following:

  • It is not possible to visit exhibits as a part of the visit to DNA & lifes laboratory.
  • It is not possible to buy food or drinks at the museum.
  • The museum will be closed upon arrival. The “DNA & life”- instructor of the day will greet the class and show the way to DNALab.
  • It is not possible to spend the breaks outside the museum.

Time: 9.00 – 15.30

Place: DNAlab, Zoologisk Museum, Universitetsparken 15, 2100 København Ø.

Parking: If you arrive by car, it is possible to get a parking permit for the parking space from the instructor. This requires that you notify us on dnalab@snm.ku.dk the day before and arrive at 8.45 on the day.

Food and drinks: Bring lunch. We have no cafeteria, and it is not possible to buy food during the lunch break.

Subjects: Biology and biotechnology

Number of students: 1-24 students. Multiple classes can register for the same day, but with a maximum of 24 students total.

Cancellation or delay: At least 24 hours before on e-mail dnalab@snm.ku.dk.

Preparation: It is not a requirement that the class has prepared for the visit before participating in DNA & life. On the day of the course, the students will be introduced to all theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to complete the analysis. Participation in the course does not require use of a computer. You are welcome to bring a computer or similar for personal notes. It is also not required that the class has participated in the prior field work to participate in the laboratory work.

Price: It costs 125 DKK per student to participate in DNA & life, and it is free for teachers. In the event of late cancellation or no-show, the full amount will be charged for the number of students indicated at registration.

Payment: When registering, the school’s EAN or CVR-number is required. After the visit and electronic invoice will be sent. Should the number of participants on the day have changed from the number indicated at registration, the teacher can notify us by e-mail dnalab@snm.ku.dk.

Registration: Registration for the next season of courses will open in spring. We collaborate with the project “DNA PÅ FORKANT”, where the students examine samples from Danish fjords to look for DNA from common, rare, invasive, and toxic species.
