Traner betegnes på arabisk med to ord. Det semitiske kurkî og låneordet ghirnîq, som stammer fra oldgræsk. Artiklen beskriver anvendelse af disse to ord og hvordan det sidstnævnte af de to i den senere litteratur bliver betegnelsen for jomfrutranen, mens det føste bliver betegnelsen for den almindelige trane.
