The collections of the Natural History Museum contain approximately 14 million specimens of preserved animals, preserved and living plants, tissue cultures, fossils, minerals, and rocks. These collections are very important for the museum's own research effort but are also much in demand for research conducted at other institutions in Denmark and abroad. They are accessible to scientists and others with a serious interest, who can either visit the museum in person or receive specimens on loan. The museum's participation in the SYNTHESYS programme has made the collections more easily accessible to European scientists.
