New Molybdenum Review: The Answer is 42!
Molybdenum does not only hold the answer to a number of questions in geosciences and life sciences, the element is also essential in products in e.g. the steel industry. Assistant professor Tais W. Dahl has published a new review article on Molybdenum – element no. 42. Tais has written the article along with colleagues from Waterloo University and Arizona State University and it is published in ”Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry – Non-Traditional Isotopes”.
In "Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams' we learn that 42 is the answer to life, universe and everything. The new article in ”Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry – Non-Traditional Isotopes” by assistant professor Tais W. Dahl and colleagues confirms that 42 - the atomic number 42 - is the answer to a considerable amount of questions.
In geoscience, Molybdenum is particularly useful for answering questions about environmental redox conditions. In the life sciences, nature settled on molybdenum as the answer to the challenge of biological-N2 fixation more than 2 billion years ago with the evolution of the Molybdenum dependent nitrogenase enzyme - and industrially Molybdenum is used in different types of steel, to improve physical properties like hardness and temperature strength, as well as chemical properties, notably corrosion resistance.
The article describes the properties of stable Molybdenum isotopes and current application of Molybdenum in e.g. geochemical, biochemical and cosmogeochemical research.
