International collaboration

The Natural History Museum of Denmark has much to offer as a partner for other research institutes from around the world. Collaboration spans a wide range of research projects and also includes collection enhancement, inventories, field work, conservation and bioinformatics. The museum currently participates in several large-scale international initiatives and projects, including:

BCGI - Botanic Gardens Conservation International - links over 800 botanic gardens and botanical institutions in more than 120 countries in the world’s largest network for plant conservation, environmental education and sustainable development.

Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF). An association of large natural history museums and other scientific institutions, formed in order to promote training, research and knowledge in the fields of systematic biology and palaeobiology.

Flora of Ethiopia. The Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea will be covering approximately 7,000 species of vascular plants, both indigenous and important cultivated species. The Flora is planned as a work in eight volumes, but several volumes may be divided into two parts due to the number of taxa to be included. The Ethiopian Flora Project was initiated in 1980, with several contributions from the staff at the Herbarium.

Synthesis of systematic resources (SYNTHESYS). An "integrated infrastructure initiative" by CETAF, supported by the European Union, for facilitating and supporting access to natural history collections by European researchers.

Towards the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT). A "network of excellence" supported by the European Union and aiming at integrating taxonomic research in the cause of biodiveristy and ecosystem research. SNM is heading the work package that will provide an overview of existing taxonomic expertise in Europe.

Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). An international network of partners working on digitising taxonomic data on the planetary biota. The secretariat of this network is physically located at the SNM. The Danish Biodiversity Information Facility (DanBIF) is GBIF's Danish node and is similarly affiliated with SNM.

Tree of Life - is a web-based collaborative project involving systematicists from around the world. The more than 5,000 webpages provide information on the diversity of species on Earth, their phylogeny and characteristics.

Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE) - is a Nordic research centre based at the Biological Institute of the University of Southern Denmark at Odense, and with members at the Geological Museum and theGeography and Geology Dept., University of Copenhagen, and at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm. Its mission is to study biological evolution in the context of environmental change.
